IU's seniors challenged to show better leadership
SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico — Indiana coach Tom Crean wasn’t happy with most phases of his team’s game Friday in a 71-67 loss to Boston University.
He didn’t like the way the Hoosiers were outrebounded 52-32, the silly fouls they committed that led to a large difference in free throws (40 attempts to 22) and how IU guarded players off the dribble. He said that concern has had Indiana playing more zone defense because the guards in particular are not playing good enough man-to-man defense.
Crean also called out two of his players, seniors Devan Dumes and Tijan Jobe , for a pair of plays on which he said they showed a lack of leadership.
Dumes was whistled for an intentional foul with 12 minutes, 13 seconds to play when he fouled John Holland hard and didn’t go for the ball. Holland made both free throws, then seconds later Tyler Morris hit a 3-pointer to give Boston a five-point trip and cut the IU lead to one.
Jobe became tangled with Valdas Sirutis with 14:05 to play and both were assessed technical fouls. Since Dumes and Jobe are IU’s only seniors, Crean said he expected more from them.
“Our lack of experienced leadership and knowing what it takes to play harder for longer caught us tonight,‘’ Crean said. "We have two seniors on this team and they both made incredibly ridiculous plays. One was a double technical foul and the other was an intentional foul because he couldn’t keep his man in front of him.’’
Crean: Muniru not ready
With IU desperately needing a presence down low, and 6-11 freshman Bawa Muniru not playing for the second game in a row, Crean was asked if he was thinking about redshirting Muniru.
Last week, Crean said he didn’t think IU was at the point in its program where it could redshirt players because of a lack of depth.
Crean said Friday that nothing has changed. But he said Muniru is just not ready to play.
“We need some power at that position,‘’ Crean said. "Bawa is really working at it, and (assistant coach) Benny ( Seltzer ) has done a phenomenal job working with him. He’s really working hard, but he just has to go through it, and it’s probably about time for me to start trusting him a little bit more as we move forward.’’
Quotable
One of Indiana’s problems Friday was that on at least four occasions in the second half, Boston missed free throws and the ball went off IU players out of bounds.
Crean said it was like nothing he has seen in his coaching career.
“I’ve been coaching since I was 19 years of age and I’ve never seen a team lose so many basketballs than what we had tonight,‘’ Crean said. "And there’s no excuse for it.’’
