Grade/subject at what school: Third grade, Shamrock Springs Elementary.

Number of years teaching: Seven.

Work email: grathwohlw@wws.k12.in.us

Background/schooling: Bachelor’s degree in history and religious studies, Indiana University, 1998; master’s degree in teaching, Andrews University, 2001.

Why did you become a teacher: I always loved being in school and learning about new people and places. I was lucky to have so many teachers make a positive impact on my life. I didn’t plan on being a teacher, it just happened.

What goals do you have for your students: I want my students to learn to take on responsibility. I want them to make good choices and be proud of what they do. I also want them to have fun when they learn.

What do you encourage parents to do at home to help their children strengthen particular skills: I think getting a nightly routine down at an early age will help children throughout their school years. Having a space to do work and a set time is a good start.

Name your favorite movie: “Breaking Away.”

Name your favorite musician or band: The Beatles.

What’s something your students might not know about you: I am a distant relative of Abraham Lincoln.
