An Indianapolis man arrested in the shooting of a 7-year-old boy was being held on $150,000 bond Tuesday.

The suspect, Thomas Owens, 20, was found hiding inside a house in the 1000 block of South Pershing Street on the Westside about an hour after the shooting late Monday, said Sgt. Paul Thompson, a spokesman for the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department.

About 10 shots were fired from an assault rifle at a vehicle in the 2400 block of West Wilkins Street, about two blocks from where Owens was found. According to the police report, Owens told police he fired the shots.

One of the bullets hit the 7-year-old as he was getting into the vehicle with his uncle. Police said it went through his left leg and into his right leg. He was taken to Riley Hospital for Children in serious condition Monday night.

The boy’s name was not available for release, Thompson said.

Owens told police he was shooting at the vehicle to retaliate for an incident involving the vehicle and its occupants at a convenience store earlier that evening, the police report said. He said he did not see the child.

Owens was arrested about 6 a.m. Tuesday and is being held at Marion County Jail II on preliminary charges of aggravated battery and criminal recklessness with a deadly weapon.

The Marion County prosecutor’s office will determine whether formal charges will be filed.

Otis Scott, 53, is the stepfather of Phillip Parks, the boy’s uncle, who was with him at the time of the shooting.

Scott said Tuesday that he hadn’t heard from Parks and had no idea why someone would be firing an assault weapon at him.

He said he was worried about the effect the shooting could have on the young boy.

“I just hope the little guy makes it,” he said. “That’s a whole lot for a little boy (to go through). He could be traumatized for a while.”
