Take cover, Indy: Rain most of week

Above normal temperatures and above normal amounts of rainfall are expected during the next week in the Indianapolis area, according to the National Weather Service.

The rain could bring this month’s precipitation back to normal.

Currently in Indianapolis, the National Weather Service has reported only 1/100th of an inch of precipitation, “way below normal,” in November, meteorologist Joe Skowronek said.

“We should be at about 1 1/2 inches by this time,” he said “We’re about 1/2-inch below normal.”

Normally, November receives an average 3/4-inch of precipitation weekly, he said.
An area of low pressure in the plain states slowly moving toward Indiana during the course of the week will cause the extended period of wet weather, he said.

“Looks like our chances linger into about Thursday. Pretty much, every day this week, there’s a pretty good chance of rain,” he said.

The best chances for precipitation are Monday night, into Tuesday, Skowronek said.
By Thursday, he expected about – to 1 inch of rainfall, spread out over several days. “It’s not a whole lot of rain. It doesn’t look like it’ll be heavy enough for flooding,” he said.

Once the rain ends on Thursday, he said, “The weekend looks pretty good. It should be dry, and highs should be in the 50s.” Highs in the 50s and lows in the 40s are expected all week, he said.

If you were looking forward to the start of Monday’s annual Leonid meteor shower, you’re out of luck, Skowronek said.

“It looks like pretty thick cloud cover,” he said. “So, it’s doubtful you would be able to see any meteors.”

Scientists say most U.S. observers should see “shooting stars” streaking across the sky every few minutes, bolstered by the lack of any interference from the moon, which starts its new phase Monday.

This year, the peak is expected during the predawn hours of Tuesday, but early-morning hours Wednesday could provide a decent show, too. Unless you’re in Indiana.
